Youth will be served! The 29-year-old Samuel Barber composed his Violin Concerto on a commission from a 27-year-old college classmate. In a brilliant move, the violinist declined to accept the work, finding it insufficiently substantial. Of course, it has found its way into the repertoire as the one of the most performed concerti. Oh, and just wait until you hear the teenaged Charlotte Marckx knock the socks off it. Works by the elder statesmen Beethoven (composed at the age of 31) and Mendelssohn (at the age of 34) round out this sparkling program.
